If you consider visiting Auschwitz Memorial you’ll need to know some specific details about this place. The Memorial of the former deadliest German concentration camp is located in the south of Poland – the city is called Oświęcim in Polish. You can reach the Auschwitz address from many places in Poland. The nearest biggest city to Oświęcim is Katowice – it’s just 35,5 km. From Katowice you can get there either by car (40 mins), by train (1 hour) or by bus (30-45 mins).

The difference between Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau

You have to know that Auschwitz Museum is divided into two places – in the distance of 2 kilometres. Auschwitz I is the start point of visiting, after that you can go to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

In Auschwitz-Birkenau there is more space – you have to walk more and you can see as well how big territory it was. In the end Auschwitz killed at least 1,1 million of people. Auschwitz I is more like a typical museum – many building next to each other so the visiting is more dense – let’s say.

How to reach Auschwitz from Kraków and Germany

There are also many options to reach Auschwitz (Oświęcim) from Cracow (Kraków) which is a city you’ll probably fall in love with when you visit it.

By car it’s around 70 kilometres (1,5 hour of the way). If you choose the train instead, it’s 2,5 hour and you have to change the train for the tram in Oświęcim to reach the Memorial. There are also many opportunities to get there by bus.
